West Ham 2-2 Liverpool: Title hopes are dwindling further for the Club Reds team

Liverpool held West Ham to a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium on Saturday, which saw Jurgen Klopp’s title hopes take another major blow.

Jarrod Bowen gave West Ham the lead just before half-time but Liverpool stormed back when Andy Robertson equalized and an Alphonse Areola own goal put Liverpool ahead.

But a late header from Michail Antonio clinched a point for West Ham as there were two major moments of controversy. There was a heated discussion between Klopp and Mohamed Salah on the bench, as he waited for the latter to come on as a substitute, and then things opened up.

West Ham keeper Areola cleared the ball inside the box, thinking a free kick had been awarded, and then Cody Jacobo was there to try and slot the ball into the empty net but referee Anthony Taylor blew his whistle to stop the game just as Jacobo was. About to register. If Jacobo had put the ball into the net, the goal would surely have been stopped and Liverpool could have won it 3-2 late on.

With this draw, West Ham raised its score to 49 points, while Liverpool raised its score to 75 points and lost more ground in the title race.

Liverpool’s faltering in Klopp’s farewell tells us he was right

Jurgen Klopp surprised everyone in January when he announced his retirement from his career with Liverpool at the end of the season. When this was announced, Liverpool were aiming for four titles, despite a major injury crisis, and everything seemed to be moving in the right direction. But Klopp is smarter than most players and the way Liverpool finished this season proves that his decision was correct. He has extracted every ounce of talent and emotion out of Liverpool teams for so long, but he no longer seems to have the energy to do so and this team is clearly at a transition point. The heated feud between Klopp at West Ham and star player Salah will be ignored, but there is clearly tension there, and has been for some time. Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and Alisson have had difficult moments this season, as has Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Liverpool’s other strikers have failed to step up as Salah struggled with form and injuries. It all adds up to Klopp making the right decision at the right time. Was he hoping his team could hang on and win the title, along with a few other accolades, to ride off into the sunset? Of course he did. But in reality, he knew that they had achieved great achievements this season and no one expected them to win the title. With this new-look squad, a top-four finish is a huge achievement and Klopp leaves Liverpool in a much better place than when he arrived. As a manager, that’s all you hope to do. Win some prizes and make some lasting memories along the way. Klopp did that, and his legacy will remain intact at Liverpool forever. When all is said and done, no one will remember that Liverpool’s title run in Klopp’s final season ended on a whimper.

Perhaps this is Liverpool’s title dream. Jurgen Klopp doesn’t look happy. He knows this is it. Three more games for Klopp as Liverpool manager and they are now very close to the title. They made a lot of defensive mistakes at West Ham.

Elliott hits the crossbar

Great work from Salah on the break and Elliott’s shot hits the crossbar and goes over the crossbar. Liverpool had some big chances in the last few minutes with Coufal making a fantastic last-minute save. Salah causes chaos.

Areola is involved in a strange situation

It does not appear that a free kick was awarded due to a foul on Areola and he cleared the ball inside the penalty area. Jackpo then arrived to try to kick the ball into the net, but referee Anthony Taylor intervened and stopped play. Areola seemed to think it was a free kick. It all came from Alisson who could not handle a simple cross, West Ham kept the pressure alive and Bowen sent a beautiful cross for Antonio to head home. Salah, Gomez and Nunez will participate in the Liverpool match. Can they save the situation?

West Ham advances! Bowen heads home from a quick corner kick moments after being blocked by Alisson. Liverpool were very sloppy in possession in defense and caused problems of their own when Alisson curled Bowen’s deflected shot around the post. Liverpool then raced from a short corner and were saved from a set-piece again when Bowen beat Jacobo to head home. Having so much possession, Liverpool became their own worst enemies.
