German Nico Hulkenberg is on the move. The 36-year-old racer has announced that he will join Stake F1 for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
Hulkenberg said in a statement: “I will return to the team I worked with in 2013 and I have fond memories of the strong team spirit in Switzerland.” “The prospect of competing with Audi is something very special. When a German manufacturer enters Formula 1 with this design, it is a unique opportunity. For the factory team to represent this car brand with a power unit made in Germany is a great honor for me.
Hulkenberg currently competes with the Haas Formula 1 Team, which he joined last year after a three-year hiatus from full-time Formula 1 competition. He has never scored a podium finish in 208 career starts.
However, he has helped raise the level of the Haas program in 2024, picking up a handful of points over five races and increasing the team’s average finish to 11.2 from 14.5 last year.
In 2026, the team will become the official Audi organization in Formula 1 in 2026 The long-standing “takeover” of the Sauber Formula 1 team.
“We are very pleased to welcome Nico back here at Hinwil from 2025 and to compete with him in Formula 1,” said Andreas Seidl, CEO of Sauber Motorsport AG and CEO of the incoming Audi F1 factory team. With his speed, experience and commitment to teamwork, he will be an important part of the transformation of our team – and the Audi Formula 1 project. From the beginning, there was a strong shared interest in building something long-term together. Nico has a strong personality, and his contributions both professionally and personally will help us make progress in developing the car and in building the team.
Currently, Valterri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu are competing in the F1 Stake, neither of them having scored a point through five races.
